Wheatcroft Homes are excited to announce that our residential development at Swing Bridge Wharf, Moira has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.
The ProCon Awards showcase the best projects and developments in construction, property and the built environment in Leicestershire and Rutland. Our beautiful canal side properties in Moira have managed to beat the competition to be announced as one of three finalists within the Medium Residential Scheme Of The Year category, the winners being announced at a sell out, glitzy ceremony taking place at the King Power Stadium on 11th November.
The nomination for this award recognises our creative and innovative approach to development, design excellence, quality of construction and materials whilst also appreciating how we successfully integrated the scheme into the surrounding area, considering both its visual and environmental impact and sustainable aspects of development.
Prior to Wheatcroft Homes developing the site, the former derelict buildings were described as “eyesores”, riddled with asbestos and hiding sections of the adjacent Ashby Canal and Moira Furnace. Our beautiful homes now blend seamlessly into the local area, with material choices and the design having been inspired by its canal side location and the Moira Furnace, and opening up the beautiful canal side for all to enjoy.
With sustainability and the environmental impact of construction being a key consideration for any developer, we looked at what measures could be introduced choosing to incorporate a sustainable drainage solution that effectively manages surface water by allowing it to be cleaned naturally through a swale before exiting into the adjacent canal. This means no surface water enters the public sewer and benefits the canal as the water level naturally gets topped up, avoiding the need for imported water and supporting the flora and fauna within.
We also increased the thermal performance of the homes making them more energy efficient and keeping energy bills for the homeowners low. Through using a brownfield site, the local area has suffered far fewer negative environmental impacts had a greenfield site been used.
It is important to us that all our developments are different to the compact and cramped style common with many new build schemes. Swing Bridge Wharf has a lovely open feel with plenty of parking and pretty landscaped private driveway. A variety of materials were used, with large windows and balconies to make the most of the surrounding views over the canal, a brick was selected with the local Furnace in mind, with a mix of cladding and render giving the development a modern twist and breaking up the street scene with a variance of house types. All our new homes also feature modern touches such as open plan living, high-end built in appliances and solid oak and quartz worktops.
Each of our developments is unique, being planned and designed specifically for its location and to meet the needs and desires of our prospective homeowners. We create bespoke new neighbourhoods that are sympathetic to their location and enhance the characteristics and style of their surroundings, whilst creating the perfect environment for modern living.
We offer a wide range of house types from starter homes that enable first time buyers to get on the housing ladder to exclusive, aspirational, luxury properties for those upsizing into their dream home.
We have everything crossed for the final awards evening and wish all other finalists the very best of luck in each of the categories. Watch this space for the results!
